Nuance Communications, Inc. has officially retired Dragon Medical Practice Edition in the USA.  According to the official tech support release.

Dragon speech recognition technology is evolving as a whole.  Dragon Medical is evolving into super tools for clinicians of all types.  While Dragon Medical Practice Edition 4 has been retired as the final version in the "Practice Edition" line in the USA,  Dragon Medical One v2021 is released.

So, what does this mean for Dragon Medical Practice Edition?  Here are the facts and below, we'll have some information on "future proofing" your Dragon Medical Practice Edition. 

Keep in mind ;

• DMPE will no longer be manufactured after March 31, 2021.  
• Maintenance and support contracts for DMPE will not be available for purchase or renewal after March 31, 2021.
• Support for DMPE will end on March 31, 2022. 

For new consumers,

You have a decision to make.  Go with the older non-cloud, non-medical, speech recognition products or go with the lightning fast, unlimited install, 100% accurate most of the time Dragon Medical One system?  Hmm  save time or save money?  Isn't time also money?  What if you can save 20-30 minutes a day?  That's worth an entire day per month or 12 days per year.

This being the case, let's say you still do not want a subscription based product and you are determined to find a copy in stock.  Should you purchase this?  Remember, all support is ending on March 31, 2022.  ALL SUPPORT including updates, upgrades and installation on new computers.  You will not be able to transfer your license.  The only way this makes sense now is to make a purchase and future proof your computers.  To run DMPE4, you need a pretty decent computer, especially if you want to future proof it.  If you purchased DMPE4 and purchased a few new future proof computers, this can still be quite an investment.  A few thousand dollars at least. Let's not forget the extra maintenance on those computers (new anti-virus, possibly other licenses as well).

If you don't want to pay for a subscription even if you get 100% accuracy most of the time, you need to future proof your installations. 

A few more comments, then some rules..

If you are a current user or plan on purchasing Dragon Medical Practice 4 before it disappears ;

• You own 1 license per serial number you own.  1 license is the equivalent of 1 user.
• You have the ability to activate on up to 4 computers for this individual user.  Activation server may be deactivated in March, 2022.
• You should but DO NOT have the ability to move your Dragon from one computer to the next.  In theory, this is supposed to be possible but in most instances, we have found uninstalling and cleaning a system will not restore an activation most of the time.  This may be an issue due to firewalls.  In special cases, Nuance may grant an increase in activation count but you need to hurry before it's too late.
• All Dragon Medical Practice Edition support will end in March 31, 2022 and the product would have reached END OF LIFE with no further support.

How to preserve your Dragon Medical Practice Edition license.  5 Pro Tips.

1. 1. Do not uninstall Dragon from any computer.  (it makes no sense since the license cannot be transferred to another computer).
2. 2. Do not destroy your old Dragon computer.  If you decide to go to the cloud, a backup is always nice to have.
3. 3. Purchase a new computer towards the end of 2021, something sufficient to install your copy of Practice Edition and last you a few years. ** You must do this before Dragon Medical Practice Edition 4 becomes end of life in order to activate the computer.
4. 4. Collect all of your serial numbers.  Depending on your system, you can get a copy of your serial number by opening Dragon and on the Dragon bar, click help > about Dragon.  This will open a splash screen with your serial number.  Take out your cell phone and snap a photo.  If you can't get into your Dragon system, try to do a search for "about dragon" on your computer.  If found, you can click on this for your serial number.  Why collect your serial numbers?  Well, we actually do not know when the Nuance license servers will go down.  With any luck, one of the servers maybe available and maybe you have an activation left.  If you don't have a copy of the installation, you can head over to our media collection for Dragon software.  The download is available for free to our current customers but for those who don't have a direct relationship with us, bandwidth costs money and we charge for this bandwidth to access our backup of Dragon Medical installations.
5. 5. Add your installation to an in-house Windows server with remote desktop (RDP or terminal services) support.  This way, you can upgrade your office computers and use Dragon in a remote desktop environment to your server.  This is only suggested for a 1 user system.  More users require planning of resources for your server.  Dragon Medical Practice Edition is a resource heavy application. Dragon Medical One will save you both time and money in this case.  Dragon Medical One  is superior to virtualized environments as requirements are 1/20th that of Dragon Medical Practice Edition
